| Ishara
Banks is a lucky Sirian. She was hatched and grew up "in- between wars,"
during a rare period of peace for Sirians. During wars, virtually all Sirians
serve and fight the given war(s). Many die in the cold void of space far
from home, never to study in any other field or have a family. But their
lives advance the greater Sirian good. Ishara was hatched during a time of
peace, so Ishara had "more options" to choose from. Of course, Ishara did
receive full training, but during times of peace, cadet training leans more
toward academic instruction.
It is a common Sirian practice to send a son or daughter (preferably both)
to live with a near relative. The near relative will, in turn, send his or
her children to live with you. It is an exchange of children. This custom
serves two purposes. It strengthens family ties, and lessens the chance that
any family could be entirely wiped out, no matter where they live. As the
"second daughter," Ishara was a likely candidate for such an exchange. So,
at the age of ten, Ishara and her sister Bryttyn were sent to live with her
Wontu Kho-Lak, and his wife Suvynna on Puppis. Wontu Kho-Lak, in turn sent
his 2nd son and 2nd daughter to live with Ishara's father, Veger-Tar.
Wontu Kho-Lak served in the Ministry of Science, on Puppis. Ishara began
her formal training there. She was sworn into the service at the age of 10.
Her training covered academics, physical training, military training and
loyalty training. All cadets serve on various spacecraft, from an early age,
leading up to a short "internship" on a real Sirian Mothership. With such
vigorous, real world training, losing classmates is common, almost expected.
Puppis was quite beautiful, with deeply forested vallies surrounded by tall,
jagged peaks. The winters were bitter cold. The deep forest regions were
perfect for training cadets. Small groups were constantly rotated into the
wild for Lok Ksaam in periods ranging from one week, up to three months.
Their academic instructors also went on the treks, to continue all studies.
During these Field Training Exercises (FTX's) cadets had to live off the
land, and hunt for their food. At the same time, cadets knew that they were
being hunted by many of the predators that made the forest their home. (Each
class goes on a Crivitt hunt using only primitive, non-energy weapons. The
crivitt being a creature similar to a Terran shark that lives in fields of
sand or deserts like terrain. Life with Wontu Kho-Lak was certainly quite
different from life with her father. Her Wontu and her father were both very
loyal Sirians, but two men could hardly be less alike. Ishara's father had
often boasted that his hands only touched Sirians. He always wore gloves
to protect himself from "contamination" by other races. His father viewed
all other races as obstacles to the creation of a Sirian Empire.
In contrast Kho-Lak often interacted with other races in the Ministry of
Science. He even invited representatives, researchers from off world to dine
in his home. He would shake their hands or embrace them as their culture
demanded. His uncle taught Ishara and his sister to be "more open" to other
races and new ideas. Her Wontu saw Sirian greatness in terms of being part
of something greater, the Protectorate her father had often mused at how
the Protectorate was be beaten in battle.
Toward the end of Ishara's training, something happened that changed her
life. Wontu Kho-Lak was quizzing Ishara about current events to test her.
A conflict was beginning to brew with one of Confederation neighbors in the
nearby quadrant. The neighbor was very well matched militarily but the pressure
on Puppis to move into that quadrant was great.
"Ishara,
How would you approach this problem?" asked Kho-Lak. Ishara
thought for a moment before giving an answer. "I'd negotiate a permanent
treaty giving up all claim to the Oolot Condordium, (which we probably can't
take by force), in exchange for the legal possession of the Gomesia System.
They would probably be glad to see the conflict resolved without bloodshed,
thinking Gomesia to be worthless.
"The Gomesia system is not exactly waiting for colonists," said Kho-Lak.
That was quite the understatement. The Gomesia system was in a good location
militarily, right along the Procyon, but was generally considered un-inhabitable.
The only planet of note being Gomesia which was known to have rich deposits
of both Topaline (which was currently being bought from Markeb) and Duranium
Alloys (which was being bought from Aludra). Gomesia had a particularly toxic
atmosphere and severe conditions. "What would you do with the system?" Kho-Lak
continued. "Mine it in environmental suits? That's pretty costly."
"No. I'd transform it," replied Ishara flatly.
"Transform an atmosphere of latium gas?" asked Wontu Kho-Lak. "How?"
"I'd contract with the Megarites to build large 'auto-formers.' Once the
first formers were built, I'd contract with Lissepian traders to deliver
it. I'd buy chemical explosives from the Valerians and blast a subterranean
base to live in until the surface was livable. As soon as a small base was
blasted in, I'd invite Lenarian miners to become share-miners (who work for
a percentage of the total ore value). I'd supply our needs in Duranium and
sell the rest.
Ishara paused and then continued, "The latium gas atmosphere would have to
be changed in several stages. It would probably take a 6 to 8 stage transition
to create an oxygen/nitrogen atmosphere. We would just have to keep mining
enough ore to make the process pay for itself."
Wontu Kho-Lak studied Ishara for a moment. "It appears you have given this
a bit of thought. That is very irregular, though, to involve so many non-Sirians.
Still,
it sounds like it might work." Then after a moment or two, he
just got up to leave the room. At the last moment, he turned and said, "Have
your proposal on your instructor's desk by the next full moon. I'm going
to arrange for this to be the final project of your training."
The next few years of Ishara's life was spent on Gomesia. Ishara's plan was,
indeed, workable. She wrote her final paper on the process. To Ishara, it
was just a puzzle: what needed to be changed into what to give you the next
component that would eventually create an atmosphere. The process ended up
10 transitional steps long, rather than 6 or 8 as she had first thought.
The hardest part was the gravity, which was 1.25 of Sirian standard gravity.
The first few years working in an environmental suit were torture, but Ishara
knew better than to complain. Sirian's didn't tolerate whining much.
While the successful mining and eventual transformation of Gomesia gained
Ishara acclaim and respect in many circles, there were some negative effects.
Her father would not even speak to her when the treaty giving up all claims
to the Oolot Condorium was signed. The Sirian military was glad to get Topaline
and Duranium Alloys from a "Sirian" source.
Ishara eventually joined military service and her ideas helped her gain a
foot hold and stature in the ranks at Monercerous. It seemed the Supreme
Leader was putting forth a task force to take control of a planet in the
SOL system. Seemed the leader was very intent on getting this planet.
Monercerous became a huge staging area. Ishara ended up on a mothership in
the scientific department heading for the SOL system. Half way there the
Supreme Leader Told his people on Sirius IV the truth behind the task force
to Earth. Meantime the Fleet of 50 ships were also told of their objectives.
So the Fifth Column came to be. |
