Charles Negus Carroll, son of Patrick, was converted to the LDS [Mormon] Church and emigrated to Utah in 1853. He lost his wife, two sons and daughter to cholera on the trek West. Much of Charles' and his family's history has been captured in a wonderfully written book by Amy Carroll Stark called "The Section". You may download the transcribed document or view part 1, part 2, part 3, part4 or part5 online. An extensive family history was also compiled by Evelyn Esplin Richardson, a grand-daughter, in August of 1965. This work includes a history of Charles' children. Download the file, crrlhist.txt. William and sister, Sarah and her family also emigrated with Charles. Brother, Parick and family began the trip in 1857 but didn't arrive in Utah until 1860. He settled in Heber with Charles and built a saw mill. See Patrick Carroll History by Iva Carroll Gray for the history of this family line. In 1878 he moved his saw mill operation to the Ashley Valley in the area of what is now Maeser, near Vernal. Find more on this family at Kay Beer's My Family site or from her gedcom at Ancestry.com. The boy's father, Patrick, is believed to have met his death on the trip to reunite with his family in 1860. But one family record indicates that he died in the Pikes Peak area in Colorado, which is a great distance from any of the established emigration trails. Could he or one of the sons have been drawn to the area during the '58 gold rush of Pikes Peak? Another record relates Teller County, Colorado as his place of death with burial in Fort Laramie, Goshen Co., Wyoming which was on the Mormon Trail. Was this just a report of his death at this outpost? |
