Isaac Brosman died at his home in Terre Haute on Sunday after an illness of 6 weeks. He had been in feeble health for many months. The funeral was held in Martinsville on Tuesday, Rev. Kettring officiating and the remains were laid to rest in the Rupp Cemetery.
Mr. Brosman was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, 75 years ago. In his youth he joined the Church of God. When still a young man he moved to Illinois settling in Martinsville where he lived for a few years until he moved to Terre Haute. There he united with the Christian Church.
He leaves a wife, two sons, two sisters, and many grand and great grandchildren.

It appears that Isaac may not have been with his parents when they moved to Illinois around 1835-36 but remained in Pennsylvania with someone else. It appears he moved with his wife and three children first to Ohio around 1851 and then to Illinois between 1857 and 1862.

It is not clear which spelling was used by this family. Some records are Brossman while others are Brosman. It is my opinion that Brossman is correct since it appears Isaac and family did not move to Ohio and Illinois until at least 1851. Assuming he remained in Pennsylvania with an aunt and uncle or grandparent while his parents moved to Illinois, the name could have become fixed as Brossman.

Schuyler Brossman's records indicate Sarah Forry may have been Sara Lutz who is married to Jacob Brossman, son of (John) Peter Brossman. The marriage date listed here supports this marriage rather than the latter. I also believe that since Jacob Brossman, son or (John) Peter Brossman, had all his children in Pennsylvania while this family lived in Indiana, makes this union more likely.

Mrs. Ann Mariah NEIDIGH, an estimable lady of Bloomfield, died at an early hour last Friday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S. R. JACKSON, after an illness covering several weeks.

Her maiden name was BROSMAN and she was born May 23, 1832 in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania; died April 6, 1906, aged 74 years, 10 months and 13 days. She came with her parents to this county and settled near Union Bethel, north of town.

She united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church at Camp Ground when a girl but afterward transferred her membership to the Methodist Protestant church at Allen Chapel at which place she held her membership until her death.

She had made her home in Bloomfield for the last fifteen years and was esteemed by all who knew her. She had been feeble for a number of years. And nine weeks before her death she slipped and fell, sustaining an injury to one of her hips, from which she never recovered.

The funeral services were held from Union Bethel Church Sunday morning, conducted by the Rev. W. H. WYLIE, and the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at that place.

We take this means of expressing our heartfelt thanks to our neighbors and friends for their many acts of kindness and sympathy during the illness and death of our dear mother, Mrs. Ann Mariah NEIDIGH.

Ezra BROSMAN was born in Lebanon County, Pa., Dec. 3, 1833. He moved with his parents to Indiana in 1851.

In 1858 he married Margaret MYERS, to whom were born six children, one son and five daughters. After a happy union of thirteen years, his wife died.

He was married to Sarah A. CUTHRELL in 1872.

He has been a resident of Greene county, Indiana, for many years. He is known by many and respected by all. He was acknowledged to be an honest, truthful, temperate, moral and religious man. He was first a member of the Lutheran church, but about six years ago he joined the Methodist church and was converted to God. He died in peace and in the triumph of living faith, March 29, 1897, aged Sixty-three years, three months and twenty-six days. His last words were, “Don’t weep for me.” C. H. P.

John BROSMAN departed this life at his residence near Bloomfield, Indiana on the 8th day of June, 1905, and the funeral services were held on the 9th, the Rev. W. H. WYLIE of the Bloomfield M. E. church officiating.

The deceased was born April 7, 1840, in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania and moved to Greene County, Indiana with his parents in 1851, where he resided until the time of his death.

On the first call for volunteers in April 1861, he volunteered as a soldier. The first call for volunteers was filled so rapidly that the company in which he enlisted was not accepted when tendered to the Governor, but in May following was accepted and assigned to the 14TH REGIMENT OF INDIANA VOUNTEER INFANTRY, commanded by Col. Nathan KIMBALL, was afterwards Gen. KIMBALL.

He went into camp at Camp Vigo, near Terre Haute, on the 7th day of May 1861, and on the 7th day of June thereafter, was mustered into the service for three years, this being the first regiment mustered into the three years service in this State. Later he re-enlisted as a veteran and served until the close of the war.

On the 11th day of July 1861, he left Indiana with his regiment for West Virginia, and was present at the battle of Rich Mountain. He was in West Virginia until March 1862, when he entered upon the Shenandoah Valley campaign with the first battle at Winchester. On July 11th, 1862, he with his regiment joined the army of the Potomac, at Harrison Landing on the James River, Va. He continued in the second corps of the army of the Potomac until April 23, 1865 when he was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps. He was in all the battles in which the Second Corps participated from Jul 1, 1862, to and including Spotsylvania courthouse at which time he was severely wounded. He served in CO D 14TH REGIMENT until that regiment was mustered out of service by reason of expiration of term of service, when he was transferred to 29TH REGIMENT OF INDIANA VOL. INFY. and later was assigned to CO. B of 29TH REGT reorganized. He was always present for duty, and always at the forefront of every battle. Among the battles in which he participated in addition to those already named were, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorville, second battle of Bull Run, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, together with many other engagements of less note. He was gallant and faithful in all his years of service.

On returning home after his long service he resumed the position of a faithful and upright citizen and continued thus to the end. His occupation was farming.

On the 28th day of February 1864, while home on veteran furlough, he united in marriage with Harriet HUNTER, formerly Harriet MYERS. To this marriage were born two children, Nancy J., who died at the age of 18, and Susan E., who married Thomas TERRELL. She died at the age of 23 leaving one child Elmer K. TERRELL, who is now fifteen years of age. Mr. BROSMAN’S wife died Sept 25, 1872. On the 27th day of January 1874, he united in marriage with Elizabeth A. BURCH, who survives him.

There were born to this marriage, five children: Charles W., who died in infancy, and four who survive him. They are Alva and Albert, aged 28 years; Ezra, aged 26 years, and Cynthia TIMMONS, wife of Ennis TIMMONS, aged 24 years.
The deceased united with the Protestant Methodist church about the year 1850 and lived a continuous upright Christian life, respected by all who knew him.

It can be truthfully said of him, that he fought a good fight and kept the faith, as a patriot and gallant soldier, as well as a follower of the Great Master; and that henceforth there is laid up for him a crown of righteousness when the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give him.

Mrs. Elizabeth Ann BROSMAN departed this life at her residence near Allen Chapel, August 21, 1912. She was born near White Hall, June 28, 1844, and at the time of her death she was sixty-eight years, one month and twenty-eight days old.

She was a daughter of George and Eliza A. BURCH. There were nine children besides her, but only three brothers survive her. They are L. P. BURCH, Bedford, Iowa, and R. W. and J. M. BURCH, of Bloomington.

She was married to John BROSMAN June 7, 1874. To them five children were born. One died in infancy. The four surviving children are: Alva, Albert and Ezra BROSMAN and Mrs. Cyntha SHIELDS.

There are fourteen surviving grandchildren.

For eight years she had suffered with cancer, and although suffering greatly she was sustained by patience and fortitude.

She united with the Protestant Methodist church in early girlhood, and lived a continuous upright Christian life, respected by all who knew her. She was perfectly resigned to go home, and expressed full confidence in rest and happiness in the life beyond.

The funeral was conducted from Allen Chapel Church by Elder J. A. SPENCER, last Friday at 1 o’clock and the body was interred at Union Bethel Cemetery.

From the book "Old Heart of Nevada", page 184 by Shawn Hall. "In 1882 he [Thomas Short] sold the Cave Creek Ranch to Jacob Bressman…The Cave Creek Ranch remained the property of Jacob Bressman until his death in 1896. After Bressman died, the ranch passed to Lou Benson, who had been a very popular teamster on stage lines to Eureka and Hamilton. Benson ran the ranch until he died in July 1927, when Albert Hankins took over. He then sold the ranch and the nearby marshlands to the government for the purpose of establishing the Ruby Lake Migratory Water Fowl and Game Refuge. A private cemetery at Cave Creek contains a number of graves, including Jacob Bressman's."

The following is an excerpt from a biography of Jacob Bressman written by Schuyler Brossman 7 Dec. 1971 and supplied by Corrinne Ellis. Another portion of this biography can be found with Benjamin Brossman, Jacob's father.

A tombstone in Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge, Ruby Valley, Nevada, marks the grave of an early pioneer of that area and reads, "Jacob Bressman, March 26, 1830 - Jan. 11, 1896 - In thee O Lord I put my trust". The grave marks the end of the trail for a man who was born in Pennsylvania, of hardy Pennsylvania German Pioneer stock, often referred to as Pennsylvania Dutch in error. He lived in Iowa and possibly Indiana or Illinois before he ended up in Nevada, according to US Census reports.

Close to the grave is a well preserved log cabin that is referred to locally as the "Bressman Cabin". The location of the cabin is T27N; R58E; NW160 and between the SE 40 and SW40, according to information found by Lynn C. Howard, Refuge Manager in a letter of 30 Nov 1971.

Mr. Howard states as an attachment in his letter: "Further search through our land acquisition files has disclosed reference to the following names on a legal document". "The heirs of Andrew Bressman and Mollie Bressman, deceased, the heirs of Louis Benson, sometimes known as Lou Benson, deceased, Thomas Short (translation of name Thomas Kline) and Richard Roe to one hundredth, and Evelyn Kelly".

Evelyn Kelly, Evelyn Benson are one and the same. She was also the daughter of Jacob Bressman or Brossman.

"Also, a land title dated 11/16/37 and signed by Evelyn Kelly and George Kelly, her husband, deeds 1215.6 acres to the U.S. Government for refuge purposes." This is the end of the letter from Mr. Howard. However, he included in his account a description by a local rancher of the family which reads: "The Benson family family made a business of hauling freight to the mining camps. Mrs Benson's father, Mr. (Jacob) Bressman, also hauled freight with the Benson's. Mrs. Deby Benson drove a four horse team and the men, Benson and Bressman, each drove a 12 horse team. During their freight hauling days they had no head-quarters and camped out. Mrs. Benson always wore a long dress, never overalls."

"They finally sold their freight outfit and bought cattle and settled in the south end of Ruby Valley. They were a rough, hardworking people, typical pioneers, having no comforts whatever in their living quarters, but they were honest, right people." "Mr. Bressman died in Ruby Valley and was buried on his property."

"Lew Benson fell through the ice in winter and frosted his face. Cancer set in causing his death. Mrs. Benson sold out for about $50, 000. She married a man younger then herself, George Kelly, who proceeded to blow most of her money in (sic). Mrs. Benson died in Elko from cancer of the throat. Mr. and Mrs. Benson are both buried in the Elko Cemetery. Mr. Benson 1851-1927."

Frank Brossman was the seventh child of Adam and Kate Gassert Brosman, and the only one who did not marry, although he grew to manhood. He worked as a hired man close to Phoenixville, Pa. and while enroute to a lime kiln was struck, along with his team and wagon, by a railway train.

"Frank BROSSMAN, driver for F.A. POTH, whose farm is in Norriton township, was instantly killed Monday morning, at the DeKalb street crossing of the Reading Railway, in Bridgeport. BOSSMAN was driving a pair of mules to a Dearborn wagon. The safety gates were raised, and he had started to cross the tracks, when the crossing watchman warned him that a passenger train was approaching. BROSSMAN saw his danger, and tried to urge his mules to a faster gait. As he reached the tracks the engine struck his team. BROSSMAN's body was terribly mutilated, and both mules were killed. He was well known in this end of the county, having been formerly employed by James S. FAUST and Frank BRUNST, of Fagleysville, for a number of years. On Sunday the day before the accident Mr. BROSSMAN visited a number of his old friends in the vicinity of Fagleysville."

Ruben Brossman whose reputation as a skilled workman at the carpenter trade extends throughout the county, resides on the old Samuel Greath place in Heidelberg Township, Berks County.

Ruben Brossman received his intellectual training in common schools and lived upon the farm until he was 25 years of age. He then learned the trade of carpenter, which he has followed since, a period of over twenty-five years. He early developed into an industrious and skillful worker, and great many buildings are the results of his labor. In 1889 he purchased the Samuel Greath place on which he has a carpenter shop. In 1891 he received an ugly cut in the knee, which compelled him to quit work for a time, but he now does all kinds of fine wood and iron work, at which he is very skillful.

He is a man of high principle, and possesses the respect and esteem of the entire community in which he lives. In political belief, he is a staunch Democrat and takes an active interest in political affairs. He has been assessor of the town since 1892, performing duties of that office in a satisfactory manner. In religious attachment, he and his worthy wife are Lutherans."

Brossman and Elizabeth Bender Brossman. he was educated in the common schools of Berks County and attended Keystone State Normal School and Prof. Brummer's Business College, after which he taught school for several years. He was then appointed deputy warden of the Berks County Prison, serving in that capacity for four years; and then appointed to the position of warden, which he filled for three years.

In 1886 he moved to Robesonia where he lived and retired for two years. In 1888 he located in a Reading section known as Ricktown! He was also engaged in other enterprises, being director of the Schuylkill Valley Bank, from its incorporation until 1906, when he retired from that position. Mr. Brossman was married May 30, 1876 to Ellen R. Richards, daughter of Benjamin and Louisa Richards and to their union, has been born a daughter, Bessie L, who married June 18, 1906, George G. Kreider, a bookkeeper of Reading, PA."

Brossman, born in 1850, in Heidelberg township, daughter of Adam L. and Elizabeth (Bender) Brossman, granddaughter of John Adam and Catherine (Leiss) Brossman, and great-granddaughter of Francis Brossman. (For full history of the Brossmans see sketch of Brossman family elsewhere in this work.) Francis Brossman located in Berks county between 1723 and 1729, (JWB note: This date is in error) and was an inhabitant of Heidelberg township at the time of the erection of the county in 1752. Adam L. Brossman was born in 1804, and was a farmer all his life in his native county, where he died in 1883, and was buried at St. Daniel's Church. He was twice married. By his first wife, Elizabeth Bickel, he had two children: William, who is buried at Hain's Church; and Priscilla, late wife of Caton Knorr, buried at St. Daniel's Church in Heidelberg township. His second wife was Elizabeth Bender. To this union there were born four sons and two daughters, as follows; Sarah B., m. Joseph W. Ernest, who died June 6, 1900, and is buried at St. Daniel's Church; Thomas is a farmer in Lower Heidelberg township; James is a contractor at Reading; and Elmira B. m. Moses K. Balthaser. Like all his family Adam L. Brossman was a Lutheran.

"Thomas J. Brossman, a successful farmer in Lower Heidelberg, was born in North Heidelberg, April 2, 1853, son of Adam L and Elizabeth (Bender) Brossman. He was brought up to farming and for 46 consecutive years lived upon the homestead farm, during all this time, not being away one week!

In the spring of 1877, he began farming for himself tenanting the old home farm for 21 years. In spring of 1899, he came to Lower Heidelberg Township and located in the well known Adam Dechert farm, a property which has been in the Dechart family for more than 100 years. It consists of 181 acres of good land and highly cultivated. Mr. Brossman is an excellent farmer, and has ten head of horses and 32 cattle and all the latest improved machinery. He has always met with success in his vocation. He owns the old homestead in North Heidelberg which consists of 90 acres, which he purchased in 1885 for $7,000. In spite of his active work in caring for his farm, he has taken interest in public affairs and has been a delegate when Judge James N. Ermentrout was first nominated for the bench!

In politics, he is a Democrat, and for ten years he served North Heidelberg as a member of the school board, has been treasurer and president and generally proved himself most efficient, having the good of the schools at heart. He was instrumental in the establishing of the township high school in Wernersville, and in securing the increase in the salaries of the teachers from $35 to $50. Mr. Brossman is a member of St. Daniel's Church and is a Lutheran in his belief. For three years he held the office of Deacon. In 1877 he married Emma Althouse, daughter of Rueben and Mathilda (Gruber) Althouse (forming people of Marion Township). "

"Isaac W Brossman, son of Benjamin, was born on his father's farm in Lower Heidelberg Township on October 22, 1842. His early education was obtained in the public schools of his district and later he attended Keystone State Normal School of Kutztown, PA.

While a student in the latter institutions, he was one of the organizers of the now famous Philomathean Literary Society in 1865, a society dear to the hearts of thousands of alumni and to this day a leading factor in the school's success. Mr. Brossman was its first secretary and Dr. Samuel A. Bear, PHD. was the first president!

Mr. Brossman was first licensed to teach in the public schools by Prof John S. Ermentrout, then County Superintendent. He never had an English book in his hands until he was 13, yet to commence teaching when he was 21. Teaching in public schools nine terms, four consecutive terms being at Lincoln in Lancaster County and he met with success wherever he was located. He was a Lutheran, to which faith his family adheres, attending St. Daniel's Church. Mr. Brossman was an intelligent and useful citizen, progressive in his work for the advancement of his town and the cause of education. On November 1, 1888 he was united in marriage with Emma Schwartz, , born May 22, 1861 in Exeter Township, a daughter of John Schwartz and grand daughter of Mayor John Schwartz (1793-1860). The last named gentleman was elected a congressman in 1858 from Berks County as an independent Democrat."

George W. Brossman, a gardener at Reading residing at No. 533 Gordon street, was born in Lower Heidelberg township, Berks county, Aug. 23, 1856, son of Benjamin Brossman. He was reared on his father's farm, where he lived until he was twenty-three years of age. He then went to Montgomery county, where he worked on a farm at Yerkes, also called Collegeville, for a period of four years. In 1877 he came to Reading, and for a number of years engaged in huckstering, being a very successful produce dealer. For two years he followed the carpenter's trade, and built four houses on Gordon street and one on Tulpehocken, and he owns considerable real estate. Since 1904 he has been in the employ of Charles W. Hendel, hat manufacturer, as gardener. Mr. Brossman served as a policeman under the administration of Mayor Weibel. In his political faith he is a Democrat. He and his family attended St. Daniel's Lutheran Church near Robesonia.His fraternal connections are with the Knights of Friendship, No. 28, Reading; Reading Consultory, No. 3, K. C. O. K. of F.; and the Foresters of America.
On Feb. 4, 1892, Mr. Brossman married Ellen R. Richards, daughter of Adam Richards of Bernville, and they have two children, Ella R., and George A.
