Camping in Wyoming

Moving to Wyoming: A Tale of Reinvention and Adventure

The Doctorate in Wyoming

Half way through my MBA, I knew it was not the end.  Epiphanies like that are concurrently hopeful and sobering.

The Mighty Pepperdine

Although not as well known as Harvard College or Princeton University, Pepperdine University in Malibu, California is well ranked in the nation (number 11 in the western US) and well above the two power houses in Utah: U of U and BYU.

My father taught me long ago that, "The big fish are caught with the big flies."

So I pulled out my biggest fly and did it!  I took an entrance exam, became acquainted and networked with Pepperdine staff and faculty, wrote to over 50 Pepperdine alumni, wrote a personal essay and was interviewed by two recognized scholars from Pepperdine University.  I will always cherish and appreciate that experience.

Destined to be a Cowboy

Camping in Wyoming - Destined to be a CowboyDestiny to us to Wyoming.  It made sense to attend the very university where I had accepted employment.  Tuition waivers are, after all, quite handy in the scheme of things.  So I made the heart-wrenching call to Pepperdine and announced my new plans.  They graciously said my decision would be Pepperdine's loss.  What an outstanding institution.

Camping in Wyoming - Destined to be a CowboyIt took two applications to the University of Wyoming Department of Adult Education and Technology, but the second time was the charm.  A class act from the department named Carey Thompson provided much inspiration.

In April 2008, I was accepted into the University of Wyoming Doctorate of Education (Ed.D) program.  I will study Instructional Technology.  Graduation will require several courses and a dissertation.  I will track my progress here.

The Road to Doctorate

After completing the courses I will develop and defend a dissertation related to instructional technology.
