Tao Feng: Fist of the Lotus

Platform: X-Box
Genre: 3D Fighting
Players: 1-2, with support for 8 player tournaments

Graphics

The graphics in this game are quite well done. All the characters seem to move fluidly, and the progressive damage is a nice touch. The character designs are pretty cool, and all the female characters are rather nice looking. As anyone who knows me can tell you, female character designs are a big part of any game for me. The ladies in this one are nice to look at, and the 3D models have a nice amount of jiggle in the right places.

Gameplay

Maybe it's just me, but if a game has an Easy difficulty setting, shouldn't the game actually be easy to play at that setting? This is a game that makes me wonder if the play testers actually bothered to test the single player mode without any sort of developer tools active to make the player invincible. I imagine it's actually possible to win against the AI, but certainly not for someone of my skill. I like games with a truly adjustable difficulty level, even though I tend to leave it at Easy. 99% of the time, I play a game just to have fun, not because I'm looking for a challenge.

Replayability

With only two secrets to unlock, the single player game isn't going to get much replay around here. There are no character-specific ending movies (at least none that I've been able to see, having only beaten Quest Mode with one character). The unlockables are a stage and a character only useable in Versus Mode. I don't have anyone who will play fighting games with me (one of the many disadvantages of not having a lot of friends), so I can't really comment on the multiplayer aspect.

Would I Buy It?

The answer to this one is no. I rented it yesterday, and I'm considering calling Hollywood Video to ask if they'll let me swap it for a different game and still have that game back when Tao Feng was due. If I saw it in a bargain bin for less than $20 and I had nothing else to spend my money on, then maybe. It does have its good points, and perhaps if I had more patience I could get better at it.
