[1] WHAT THE PATCH FIXES
====================================
The following defects are fixed with the Generations 5.2.x.x to 6.0.1.0
Patch:
Editing chart/caption boxes:
- Hot spot on Chart boxes has been enlarged. Allows user to more easily
open a chart box by double clicking on it.
- Caption box now correctly surrounds the caption text. This issue may
have been introduced in the 5.2.1.1 patch, and is now corrected.
Saving as an image:
- User can now copy and paste a chart from EasyChart to an image editing
program like Paint.
- Copying a large chart will now notify the user if the chart is too big
to copy to the clipboard. If this message occurs, the chart can be saved
as an image file from the File menu.
- WMF support has been removed, and replaced with EMF support, which is
more stable. Charts can be saved as an .emf or .bmp file from the File menu.
Chart size issues:
- In Generations 5.2, if certain fields (or all fields) were selected
for a chart layout, the person box displayed on the chart would be out
of proportion (extremely long or tall, with text in a very large font
size.) This also caused other issues including: Charts having thousands
of pages but displaying a negative number of pages, Charts appearing to
have large black boxes, Scroll bars not working correctly, Charts locking up.
- A similar issue caused the pedigree chart to collapse, with the chart
filling one page, text bunched together, and tiny chart boxes. All of
these issues are corrected in Generations 6.0.
Timeline charts:
- Perspectives have a larger hot zone. Allows user to more easily open
a timeline perspective by double clicking on it.
- Perspective lines no longer run through event text.
- Perspective events no longer overlap, or, if they are overlapped, 'Clean
Up' will work to correct it.
The following defects were fixed with the previous Generations 5.2.1.1
patch and are also incorporated into this newest patch.
- When upgrading from Generations 4.2, sources attached to dates are not
imported correctly.
- The scroll bar jumps around when scrolling through the source window.
- EasyChart's trim feature does not hold when printing.
[2] HOW TO INSTALL THE PATCH
====================================
This patch is a self extracting zip file which will update your current
Tree5.exe and Charts.exe with the updated executables. If the patch will
not update these files it is possible you have a computer virus that has
invected them. Obtain a virus checking software program to fix the problem.
The Generations 5.2.x.x to 6.0.1.0 Patch will update any previous
version of Generations 5.2 to the current version 6.0.1.0 Tree5.exe and
Chart5.exe.
- After the patch has been downloaded, double click on the gen52.exe
file. This will begin the patch installation.
- The first screen you will view is the Welcome screen. Click Next to
view the Readme file
- Read through the readme for current information about what the patch
fixes and where to get more information about the product. Click Next
again to setup the installation directory.
- Select Destination Directory will automatically find the directory to
which Generations is installed. If it does not display the correct
directory, click the Browse button. Select the correct drive letter and
directory and click OK. Verify that the correct directory is now chosen,
then click Next.
- Click Yes or No to create backup files of your current Generations
executables. Click Next. If you choose to backup the files, select a
backup directory. It will default to a backup folder in the current
Generations directory. Click Next.
- The files will copy to the Generations directory, replacing the old
executable with the updated files. Click Finish.

Generations has an interactive mailing list for users to help each other
with tips and tricks for using the product. This mailing list is called
the Generations Discussion list. If you'd like to join this list, please
visit this web page listed below. This mailing list is reviewed by Sierra
to stay current with the user discussion; however, Sierra's technical
support group does not monitor this list, it is for users to help other
users.<>
The Product Support area of our web site also has an extensive list of
tips about using Generations. Many of these tips have been authored by
Mike Hobart, a very knowledgeable user of Generations, and others come
from the product team. There is also a facility for you to add tips if
you've got something to share that's not already on the site. The web
address for this area is:
If you have suggestions for functions you would like to see implemented
in future versions of Generations, please email them to
Generations.Suggestions@Sierra.com. Likewise, if you find errors in the
program that are not corrected by normal troubleshooting, also email them
to Generations.Suggestions@Sierra.com. Be sure to include specific
information about what you have tried to correct the issue, and the steps
taken to reproduce the issue. Due to the large volume of feedback we
receive each day, we are unable to respond to each individual suggestion,
but please know your suggestions are important to us. If we need more
information about a bug or feature request, we will be sure to contact you.
If you have issues of a more technical nature, you can email Technical
Support at Home@Sierra.com. Requests for rebates and upgrades or questions
about product availability can be sent to Customer.Support@Sierra.com.
Again, due to volume, individual usage questions cannot be addressed from
the Suggestions, Support, or Customer Service mailboxes. Please send
usage questions to the Generations Discussion list. More information
about contacting Sierra can be found below.
