Have a "Test" family file for experiments
Tip version: 23.2
Modified date: 13 May 2001
Software versions: All
This is pretty obvious, but still should be mentioned. Have a small "test" family file with a couple of hundred people in it spanning a few generations that you use for testing purposes. This is useful when you are studying how to do various types of searches, adding fields or flags, deleting using marked records (a very dangerous procedure!!!), etc.
Basically, it should be there to experiment with for anything you are uncertain about. It can be part of one of your own family files or the "Sample" family file that comes with Generations (this is not version or even program specific advice!). I use another file for my own testing purposes as I find that the Sample file is a bit small for these purposes.
Experiment with your test file and you won't lose anything important if you or the program mess up!
