Notes for John Erbe
They lived in Green Bay, WIsconsin, according to Thordson3, who has his name as Henry Erbe. The 1870 census has him as John and they are living in Sauk City, Sauk Co., Wisconsin.

It is possible that there were two John Erbes in Sauk County at this time.

John and Cornelia were living in Sauk City at the time of their marriage. His occupation was given as joiner.

They were living in Prairie Du Sac at the time. His occupation was given as farmer. His parents were given as John (done by ditto so possibly in error), and Catherine. His surname was given as Erven. We know from the information on his daughter Josephine that this is John Erbe, just with a number of errors in the entry.

He declared his intention to become a citizen in Sauk County, Wisconsin on 27 October 1860. He stated that he was a citizen of Germany, born in 1826, and that he had arrived in New York in July 1851.

He is not found in the "Germans to America" index for that time period. There are no Erbe's listed as arriving in New York in that month. There is a possible match, a John-Frederick Erbe, arriving in New York on 5 June 1852, age 24, a forester from Wurttemburg.

They had a Michael Birk, 56, a laborer from Prussia, boarding with them at the time of the 1880 census.

Notes for ??? (Spouse 1)
Inserted as he had children 3+ years of age in 1860, but he had only married Caroline in 1857.
Medical Notes for Cornelia (Spouse 2)
She died not long after her son Charles was born, so the death was undoubtedly related to the childbirth.
Misc. Notes
Her name in the marriage record index is given as Cornelia while it is given as Caroline on the gravestone.

Notes for John & Cornelia (Family)
The marriage was performed by Charles Hurley, J.P.
Notes for Margreth (Spouse 3)
The godparents and witnesses at her christening were Richter Leonhard Disch from Flasch, Peter Leonard, Anna Maria Johanni, Anna Barbara Plon for her daughter Maria, Mar[greth] Lutscher-Hertner for her daughter.

She arrived in New York on 14 May 1859 aboard the ship "Progress" which sailed from Havre, France. There were a number of other Swiss emigrants on the ship, including a 7 year old Nicholas Darnutzer, by the way.

Her name was given as Margrethe on the marriage record and her parents were correctly named.

NOTE: Because of the overlap between families, her ancestry may be found in the genealogy of Christina Tarnutzer and her two husbands, also on this website.
