Misc. Notes
He left Lom on 25 May 1870, just a few days after his sister Ronnaug and brother Tjostolf. They sailed from Liverpool, England, on 8 June 1870 aboard the Montreal Ocean Steam-Ship Company vessel "Germany," which arrived in Quebec on 22 June 1870. Thorsten is listed with his wife Ronnaug. They traveled together with Paul Knudson Laingen and Kjostof [Tjostolf] Kjestad, and others. They probably also arrived in Chicago, IL, in July 1870 with the Laingens. The route to Quebec, either directly from Norway or via Quebec, and then through the Great Lakes, was a common one for Norwegians emigrating to America.

He homesteaded land in Mountain Lake township of Cottonwood Co., Minnesota, adjacent to that of his brother Tjostulf and to Paul Knudson Laingen. He had 80 acres in the N 1/2 of the NW 1/4 of section 22, township 105, range 34. He sold it for $1650. to Isaak W. Schulz of Mountain Lake on 22 July 1878. This is the land which he homesteaded (application 6694) and on which he registered his final payment on 2 Jan 1878.

He then moved to Brown Co., Minnesota, where he lived near his brother Sevald in Linden Twp. The death of his first wife Regina may have had much to do with this.

His estate was probated in Brown Co., Minnesota, with his brother Tjostulf as the administrator (v. C, p. 267, file 1993).

Buried in Lot 79 of the Linden Lutheran Cemetery. Torsten Kjestad was the original lotholder and it was transfered to Richard Kjestad in 1967. The Watonwan County death index has his parents listed incorrectly.

He appears as a witness to a baptism at the Linden Lutheran church on 8 January 1871. The record is interesting so I will abstract it here:

Peder Elias, b. 16 Dec. 1870, bp. 8 Jan 1871, s. of Ole Pederen Bjorgen & Ronnaug Johnsdattir, witnesses Thosten J. Kjostad, Ole Olsen Skaar, Seval J. Kjostad, Kari Iversdattir, Ronaug Paulsdattir, Ragnild Johnsdattir.

Quite a few of the relatives from Lom, Oppland, Norway, show up at that christening.7 (b. 1, pp. 18-19) He also appears at other christenings in Linden from time to time.

Andrew Christiansen is living with him at the time of the 1885 Minnesota census and apparently working for him on the farm.

His marriage to Rosa was performed by Rev. H. Borge and was witnesses by Paul Olsen and Peter Laingen.

Medical Notes for Ragnild R. (Spouse 2)
She died from progressive pernicious anemia. Dr. W. J. McCarthy was her physician and had been treating her from March 1910.
Misc. Notes
The 1900 census has her birth as Aug 1852, but her marriage license application gives it as 18 June 1853. Her death certificate gives the date as 11 August 1852, so we will use that date. It may be that the 1853 date is that of her christening, so check the Norwegian church records. Called "Ragnild" in the 1885 Minnesota census. She is the Ragnild Rasmusdatter Ekle who was on the same ship as the Laingens and Kjestads.

Buried in Lot 79 of the Linden Lutheran Cemetery.
