Medical Notes for John Duncan
He died at the Watsonville Community Hospital on the Santa Cruz County side of Watsonville. He was there for one week before his death. The death was caused by multiple cerebral thromboses suffered over a ten day period. He had suffered from cerebral arteriosclerosis and general arteriosclerosis for the ten years before his death.

John served as a Congregationalist minister for some 55 years before he retired. They lived at 3939 SE Kelly St., Portland, Oregon in the late 1950s. Upon their move to California they lived at 796 Hall Road in rural Watsonville, Santa Cruz County, California. They moved there about 1960 and he was still living there at his death. The death information was initially provided by the SSDI and was confirmed by the death certifica.

Watsonville Pajoronian, 12 September 1968, p. 2, col. 5:

" DUNCAN - In Watsonville, Sept. 11, 1968, John Duncan, 92, a native of Ireland. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Sig Koopmans of Watsonville and Mrs. Ernest Volkman of Calistoga; four sons, the Rev. William J. Duncan of Japan, Dwight A. Duncan and Howard I. Duncan of Illinois and Robert O. Duncan of Wisconsin; 34 grandchildren; one great-grandchild, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara, and a daughter, Mrs. J. Muir.
(Friends may attend funeral services at White's Memorial Chapel Saturday at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Roland McIlnay of the First Baptist Church officiating.)"

She died from uremia brought about by a stomach cancer which had metastized.
Misc. Notes
She was simply listed as a ---- Knutzen, a female child, on her birth certificate as her parents had not yet named her. Her parents are named correctly and her father's occupaion is given as marble worker, so the identification is correct.

She and Arthur were living with cousins at 2662 N. 42nd Avenue at the time of the 1900 census.

She died at their home at 796 Hall Road, Watsonville, Monterey Co., California. This is in the rural part of Watsonville. They had been at that address for two years and had been living in California for 2 1/2 years.

" DUNCAN - In Watsonville, July 23, 1962, Mrs. Clara Marie Duncan, 80, a native of Chicago. She leaves her husband, the Rev. John Duncan, a retired Congregational Church minister; two daughters, Mrs. Lily Beth Volman of Calistoga and Mrs. Olive Koopmans of Watsonville (a third daughter, Mrs. Lois Muir of Texas, preceded her in death); and four sons, William, a missionary in Japan, Dwight and Howard of Illinois, and Robert of Wisconsin.
(Friends are invited to attend funeral services at 1 p.m. Thursday at Chapel Hill United Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Gregory J. Micheaels [sic] officiating. Burial will be in the Castroville District Cemetery. White's Memorail Chapel is in charge of arrangements.)"

Note that the burial location given in the funeral notice differs from that listed on her death certificate.
