Notes for Anna Thöni
She was born in St. Antönien Castels. The godparents and witnesses at her christening were Valtin Lötscher, Leonhart Valner [?], Barbla Lötscherin, Madlena Flütschin, and Anna Lötschnerin.

Called Anna Schalaben in the 1838 census. Very unusually, the death record does not name her parents. Perhaps no relatives were in town any more or they weren't certain. The date of birth calculated from her age at death would be 31 May 1798, that found in the St. Antönien records is 17 May 1798, a close match (especially given that the Schiers death records showed that her parents were not known by the informant), and probably means that we have identified her.

The recording of the birth of Valentin, son of Valtin Schaleben and Anna Thöni, at St. Antonien Castels in 1819 appears to confirm this identification.

Her birth had not been found in the records of Schiers, Schuders, or Luzein. Note that she appears NOT to be the Anna Thöni who died on 28 April 1814, age 15 years, 6 months, and 19 days. That Anna almost certainly was the daughter of Hans Thöni and Anna Ladner, born on 3 Oct 1798 in the Ascharina district.

The 1848 Swiss census lists her birthdate as 1 December 1799.
Notes for Valentin (Spouse 1)
The stories recounted by his grandson Valentin (son of Valentin and his wife Christina), about the latter's adventures in the Napoleanic wars may well relate to THIS Valentin. Given the fact that the given name is being repeated, this is easy to understand.

His mother and sister were living with him at the 1835 census, as was a Jon [?] Gartaf [???].

Valentine and his family were enumerated just after Nicholas Tarnutzer and his family in the 1850 census (there was some seperation between them at the 1835 census). So Valentine and Christina were a case of marrying the next-door neighbor, or the in-laws moved together.

They were living in the Stels district at the time of the 1848 census. His death record notes that he was from the St[els] district.
