Introduction

The family and ancestry of Christina Tarnutzer and her two husbands, Valentin Schalaben and Johannes Johanni.

Christina was born in Schiers, Graubünden, Switzerland, in 1823, and died at Madelia, Watonwan Co., Minnesota, in 1916. Valentin Schaleben, her first husband, was born in Schiers in 1824, and died at Palermo, Sicily, in 1854. Johannes Johanni, her second husband, was born at Jenins, Graubünden, Switzerland in 1832, and died at Linden, Brown Co., Minnesota in 1911.

Christina has numerous descendants through her son Valentine Schaleben and her daughter Anna Johanni. As far as I have been able to determine, the Schalaben surname is no longer present in Switzerland and all Schalebens in the United States are descended from Valentin and Christina. They may be Schalabens present in France from some of that surname who emigrated from Switzerland in the 1800s, but I have not located any at this time.
