He served as a Private, and in certain town committees retaining to covenant of exclusion of British goods on account of grievances stated.145
Misc. Notes
One of the original proprietors of Brimfield, Hampden Co., Massachusets, along with his father. A member of the Committee of Correspondence for Brimfield in the Revolutionary War.

His gravestone is inscribed:
"Sacred to the Memory of Deacon Joseph Hoar, who died November 7th, 1797, in the 89th year of his age.
"Refrain, my friends, dry up your tears,
I must lie here till Christ appears."139

The Corbin Collection has the same, except for the last two lines of verse. The grave is in the Old Part of the Brimfield Center Cemetery, row 16, plat 167. They also note in their "Footstones and miscellaneous discarded ones" category:
