He was wounded in the fight at Turner's Falls on 19 May 1676. He suffered a gunshot would through one arm and the other arm was broken.
He was wounded at Turners Falls, Massachusetts, in 1676, during King Phillip's War, serving under Capt. Turner. He was later promoted to a Lieutenant in the militia.232

John served as constable at Springfield in 1672. He was selectman numerous times: 1676, 1678, 1680, 1682, 1684, 1686, 1688-1690, 1693, 1698, 1699, 1708-1709. Deputy to the Massachusetts General Court, 1699, 1701-1705.

One of the Springfield petitioners to the Massachusetts General Court in 1700 for the establishment of a new town to the eastwards, which would become Brimfield.

He was Deacon of the Springfield Church. He became a freeman in 1682. He was a member of the committee for settlement of Brookfield, Massachusetts, in 1686, and was sent with five others to the relief of Brookfield and to fortify it.

He bought half of a lot [either the ministry home lot or Samuel Chapin's lot] from Japhet Chapin on 19 November 1667.232
