Notes for Capt. William French
He sailed with his wife and family on the ship "Defence," Thomoas Bostock, master, from London on 4 July 1635 as "servants" to Roger Harlakenden, his wife and sister. The servant status was probably used as a deception.

He is listed as aged 30, Eliza his wife, aged 32, children Elizabeth, aged 6, Maria, aged 2 1/2, Francis, aged 10, and Joseph, aged 5 months.

He was a freeman in Cambridge in 1636 and was one of the first settlers of Billerica, Mass. He was the first representative to the General Court from Billerica. He served as a lieutenant and captain in King Phillip's War. He wrote a treatise on Indian education called "Strength out of Weakness."

He made his will as a Lt. on 5 June 1679 and left a bequest to the "eldest daughter of Jonathan Peake," among those identified as "my grandchildren."296
