Notes for Dea. Samuel Chapin
A considerable amount of detail is available, fill in from the general sources. R.S. Hitchcock is also a source.327

Samuel's son Josias was baptized at Berry Pomeroy, Devonshire, on 29 Oct 1637, and Samuel was in Roxbury, MA, in 1639. This defines the interval of there emigration, most probably in the summer of 1638.

Howard M. Chapin157 considers it probable that the Chapins of Paignton and Berry Pomeroy, both in the hundred of Haytor, were related to or descended from the Chapins of the neighboring hundred of Coleridge which contains the parishes of Totnes and Harbeton. There is also a possible connectiion to the Chapin family in Cornworthy.

Samuel Chapin took the freeman's oath in Boston on 2 June 1641.

He moved to Springfield in 1642. He was appointed magistrated there on 10 October 1652, and in 1654 this was extended to an indefinite appointment.

Samuel received a deed for most of the land in the valley between Chicopee River and Willimansett Brook from John Pyncheon on 9 March 1666. He later deeded it to his son Japhet.

Samuel lived in the home lot just south of the ministry lot in the centre of the village.
