Notes for Johanna Tostendattir (Strom)
The godparents and witnesses at her christening wer Johannes Lille Nedgems, Berger Nyshuus, Fin Nilsen, Kirsti Tosignes, and Sigrid Eriksdatter. She was still listed as being from the Prestegaard farm when she emigrated in 1861, so it is not clear why she was known by the farm name of Strom in America. It may well be that she emigrated to join Strom cousins in America, and thus used that surname. The Brown County Historical Society has a good photograph of her and her first husband with their children.59 The affadavit with the marriage license application for Seval and Johanna gives the information on her first husband and that the three eldest children in the 1880 census, all given with surname Kjestad, are in fact children with her first husband. Seven of her eight children from both marraiges were still alive in 1910. Her surname is written down in the baptismal record of Nichal, but it is cramped and hard to read. It is clear on the record for Iver. Her estate was probated in Brown Co., Minnesota, with Henry Anderson as the administrator (v. F, p. 529, case 4144). Buried in Lot 42 of the Linden Lutheran Cemetery. Check various Minnesota censuses.

The Nes in Hallingdal church record has his birthdate as 16 February 1831, not the 14 February 1831 date recorded at the Linden cemetery. His parents were not married when he was born. The godparents and witnesses at his christening were Syver Sobbel, Anne ditto, Margit Lislelien, Thomas Kinneberg, and Syver Olsen Horningset.70 It is not clear why he was being christened at a church so far away from the farm where he was born. It is possible that he was christened more than once and that this was done for relatives in the Nes area. He was a member of the Linden Lutheran Church by 10 May 1861, when he took communion. Note that just the second family before his at the 1860 U.S. census was the family of Christian Nelson (59), wife Turina (56), Nelsen (16), Sevart (17), Uriah (14), all born in Norway, and John (11) born in Minnesota. His family was listed between that of Andrew Olson and that of Ole Olson in the 1865 Minnesota state census. " Ever Nelson CHARTER MEMBER OF LINDEN CONGREGATION Died on September 6th 1868 at age of 37 years 6 months and 20 days. Linden's congregation Cemetery had just been dedicated as its burial grounds, but had not been subdivided int[o, sic] lots, consequently, that is the reason Ever Nelsn was intered [sic] in a grave all by it self [sic]. Ever Nelson was the second interment made in Linden Cemetery immediately following death."54 His estate was probated in Brown Co., Minnesota, with his widow as the administrator (Case 215). The Brown County Historical Society has two photographs of him, one by himself and one of himself with wife Johanne and one of their children.59

His cause of death was Lobar Pneumonia suffered for four days, with senility contributing. Dr. Mathias Lundt was his physician.
Misc. Notes
He was living on the family farm in Lom, Oppland, in 1865. He left Lom in May 1866 for America according to the church records. He was a member of the Linden Lutheran Church by 24 October 1870, when he took communion. His marriage to Johanna took place on 10 April 1872, he was age 38 and from Lom, Norway, and she was age 32 and from Øyer, Norway. The witnesses were Endre Levig and Ole Pederson Bjorgen. It looks like it took place at T. Bruden's house if I'm reading the record correctly. He filed first papers for citizenship in 1871 [get a copy since they may show more details, such as where he lived 1866-1870.] His marriage with Johanna was performed by Rev. Thor Hattrem, with Endre Christopherson and Ole Peterson as witnesses. He is often seen as a godparent or baptismal witness to the children of Ole Petersen and his wife Ronnaug Johnsdattir in the Linden Lutheran Church records. There was a Mary Russell, age 32, born in Iowa, living with them in 1885 and probably working as a domestic. They had Andrew Larson working as a farm laborer in 1910. He bought 40 acres of land from the St. Paul and Sioux City Railroad Company for $220 on 30 October 1882. The property was SE 1/4 of SE 1/4, Section 27, Township 108 N., Range 30 W.55 Buried in Lot 42 of the Linden Lutheran Cemetery. Given as Sewald Kjestad in the records, he was the original lot holder. IGI sources: batch C421551 (source 125511), which incorrectly has the birth date as the christening.
