USS Odysseus NCC-1978(refit)

The newly refitted USS Odysseus NCC-1978. Unlike the previous design, which was a heavily modified Enterprise A kit. This version is, at the suggestion of a friend who has seen a miniature I did this way, modified from the Reliant kit. This incarnation was finalized in October 1997.

Unlike her predecessor, there was not a lot of "scratch-building" necessary. As I was not using the "roll-bar" from the Reliant, nor it's normal nacelle assembly, I used a moto-tool to sand off the flanges on the main hull that had been built up to accomodate them. Putty was used to fill the resulting holes in the hull. A wiring channel was cut into the top of the main hull with a moto-tool.and the new support strut, which I fashioned from cardboard and sheet styrene, was put into place.

While I was not using the roll-bar, the Reliant weapons pod was turned around to become the Odysseus' deflector pod. This involved removing the strut portions and filling the ends with sheet styrene rather than the photon tubes.

Learning from a mistake in the desgin of its predecessor, I fashioned the strut assembly so that it would pass through the pod as a single unit. I figured that this would bypass the flaw that caused the nacelle droop in the original model.
To set up the photon tube assembly, I used what would have been the forward tubes from the weapons pod. I cut a channel in the front of the saucer where I wanted the tubes, and then sanded the tubes themselves until they fit snugly. I ran the wiring for the lights in the main hull down through the base to a switch. Disappointed with the stock Reliant base, I used the base from the AMT K'T'inga Klingon Cruiser in its place. The details and striping were all hand painted. The lettering was created with Corel Draw and a blank decal sheet(I hope to improve that technique in the future)
