This is what happened when a friend of mine asked me "What would a Mercury class corvette look like?" My imagination got the better of me, and he got the model for a Christmas present in '97.
| Overall, the ship would actually be about half the size of the Enterprise-A.
I built her using the saucer and nacelles from a left-over Ent-A kit along
with balsa, plywood, and a little sheet styrene. One of the biggest challenges I faced was in making the bridge the right scale. I opted to modify the structure that would normally comprise B-C deck into the larger bridge. The front was cut out and the gap filled with strips of sheet styrene. The back was also modified with balsa and styrene to allow for the docking port normally found on that style of bridge module. |

The hull addition was constructed from a chunk of 3/16" plywood that
was left over from another project. The same goes for the strut and torpedo
pod. The warp engine struts are crafted from 3/32" balsa. One of the larger difficulties in building the ship was extrapolating the lower hull details. It seems that when I designed the thing, I neglected to design bottom of the hull. |
| The markings were drawn on computer and then printed onto typing paper using a similar method to what I used on the Talon. Due to some difference in the paper being used, I did have a problem with the colors running and had to touch up some of the markings by hand. | ![]() |

After multiple repairs due to damage from several moves, the Backlash was "beaten up" even further with the addition of repair plates and mispainted patches.. |
