During the course of my playing the Star Trek Strategic Operations Simulator by FASA, I designed a number of ships. The Deathbird, shown here, was designed as kind of a bridge between the old D7 and the newer Bird of Prey.
| I started with the reissue of the older D7, as it was depicted in the original series. I chopped off the wings from the main hull and reversed them to create a more forward swept wing. After squaring off the tips, I placed the stock nacelle assemblies onto the ends. |  |

After finishing with the wings, I turned my attentions to the front of the ship. There, I modified the front end to accomodate two torpedo launchers. The launcher that came with the kit wound up facing aft. |
| After adding four squares of styrene to simulate the newer style impulse vents, I gave the whole model a base coat of black. I then added details in dark grey and Ral Partha's Dragon Scale Red. Marking were hand painted in the same colors. |  |
