With the advancing age of the Federation class battlecruisers, or "dreadnoughts"
as they were often referred, Starfleet commissioned an updated version of
the ship. Utilizing the latest technologies from the uprated
Excelsior class, as well
as an experimental variety of "phaser cannon," the USS Alliance was one of
the most powerful starships in existence.
Due to the expense involved in building these vessels at the time, only 12
were built.
