As things progressed from the late 23rd century into the early 24th century,
Starfleet engineers began looking at radical new designs.
Using components of the now-proven uprated
Constitution class
ships as a basis, They tried to increase both firepower and
maneuverability.
Using a wider nacelle setup, akin to what was used on the failed
Salem class ships, as well as an array of experimental
weaponry and shields, the Corsair was born.
The design was initially rejected as "too radical" for the time, and only
the prototype, USS Corsair, was built.
With the advent of the fleet's near-destruction at Wolf 359 and the war with
the Dominion, the usage of older components makes the quick and relatively
inexpensive construction of these ships possible now.
Outfitted with pulse phaser cannon, as well as both photon and quantum torpedoes,
these ships pack a suprising punch for their relatively small size when compared
to larger vessels.
This design came from an idea that sprang into my head while looking at the
Akira class schematics.
I wondered what a "movie" version based on the
Enterprise-A might
look like.
This is actually the second version of what I came up with.
