Initially concieved as a light research cruiser, the Explorer class carried
minimal firepower and relied mostly on speed in combat situations.
A critical flaw, however, was found in the nacelle support assembly. It tended
to shear off in high speed maneuvers, leaving the ship without warp capability
and depriving it of the use of its photon torpedoes.
The Explorers were succeeded by the Pegasus class.
The model for this ship was concieved when I held the nacelles of the damaged
Ororo Munroe above the saucer. The rest of the ship just kind of fell into
place. Ironically, the model was actually built before the drawing was
done.
I have since redesigned the ship(shown here) to allow for the use of a
saucer-mounter navigational deflector.
