Designed at roughly the same time as the uprated
Constitution Class
USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A was being commissioned, the Glamdring class utilizes
several of the same design features. She was designed to have a smaller profile
than the Constitution, as well as be more maneuverable. The class ship, USS
Glamdring NX-2689, tested out well in trials, and contracts for more ships
were requested, although changes were made to the production models.
In the end, however, her similarities to the Constitution class ships proved
to be her undoing. Starfleet decided to stick with the proven Constitution
class ships, and only twelve Glamdrings were built. The last being the USS
Excalibur NCC-2711.
This desging actually came about after the original model, USS Excalibur
NCC-1711, fell from my ceiling one too many times. Repairs to the weakened
nacelle strut joints had been done too many times in the past. Instead, I
decided to cobble together a new ship using the parts of the old. The idea
here was to need as little modification to the original parts as possible.
I wound up added the hull from the Excelsior as an afterthought.
