When problems developed with the Explorer class,
Starfleet looked to the old Vagabond class for
the inspiration to resolve the problems. The result was the Pegasus class.
Sporting a shorter, broader support strut to increase stability and front-saucer
mounted photon tubes in the event of the loss of the nacelle assembly.
The Pegasus class was very successful and served as the basis for many of
the elements found in the Constellation,
Odysseus, and Quasar
classes.
Though actually second in the mythical "series" of designs, the Pegasus was actually the first to be designed.
It's recently undergone a few design changes as I prepare to do a new model of it.
