With the combination of the fleet's devastation at Wolf 359 and the current
war with the Dominion, new ships were desperately needed to fill the growing
gaps in the fleet. Given the time necessary to build new ships from new designs,
Starfleet looked to several older designs for possible upgrades. One of these
was the under-rated Salem class.
These ships showed promise previously, but did not fill their intended role.
They were suited for a new role, however.
After being fitted with an entirely new weapons and shield array, as well
as all new, modern, propulsion systems, the uprated Salem class is ready
for action.
