With the advancing age of the Constellation and Cheyenne class ships, Starfleet concieved a new vessel along similar lines. Using elements of the new Sovereign class ships, the Stargazer has four nacelles mounted in an "x-wing" type configuration rather than the traditional paired mountings. It is hoped that this arangement will make the individual engines less vulnerable to attack by spreading their mounting points.
